Family Dental Care 1801 - "Treatise on the Human Teeth" is the first family dental care book published in America. 1832 - James Snell invents the first dental chair that reclines. 1839 - The "American Journal of Dental Science", the world's first dental journal, begins publication. It greatly improves the quality of family dental care. Plans are quickly formed to internationalize the publication. 1840 - World's first dental school established; the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. The school mainly focuses on family dental care. 1841 - The state of Alabama enacts the first dental practice act, regulating dentistry and dental insurance in the United States of America. 1846 - First successful public demonstration of the use of ether anesthesia for surgery. 1866 - Lucy Beaman Hobbs becomes the first woman to earn a dental degree. 1869 - Robert Tanner Freeman becomes the first African-American to earn a dental degree. 1885 - The collapsible metal tube revolutionizes toothpaste manufacturing and marketing and greatly improving family dental care in America. 1890 - Willoughby Miller, an American dentist practising dentistry in Germany, notes the microbial basis of dental decay in his bookand thus generates a never seen before interest in oral hygiene and starts a world-wide movement to promote regular tooth brushing, dental flossing and standard family dental care. 1896 - New Orleans dentist C.E. Kells takes the first dental x-ray in the U.S.
